How does Lumecca IPL work?
How does Lumecca IPL work?

Lumecca uses intense pulsed light (IPL) to target pigment and superficial vascular concerns within the skin. Following treatment, pigmented spots may temporarily darken before gradually flaking or fading, resulting in a clearer and more even-looking complexion.

For redness and superficial vascular concerns, light energy targets haemoglobin within visible vessels, helping to reduce their appearance and improve overall skin tone. The treatment is non-ablative, meaning it does not remove or resurface the outer layers of the skin in the way ablative laser resurfacing does.

Frequently asked questions
What results can you expect?
Following Lumecca IPL, the skin may gradually appear clearer, brighter and more even. Pigmented spots can temporarily darken before beginning to fade, while visible redness may become less pronounced and the overall complexion may appear fresher and more luminous.

Some patients notice an improvement after the first treatment, while more pronounced pigmentation, sun damage or photoageing may require a course of several sessions.
The number of treatments depends on the condition of the skin, the type and extent of pigmentation and the desired outcome. For mild pigmentation and uneven skin tone, improvement may sometimes be visible after the first session.

More pronounced sun damage or photoageing may require a course of approximately 1–4 treatments, typically spaced several weeks apart. The treatment plan is determined individually following assessment of the skin.
The treatment is generally well tolerated. The sensation is often described as a brief snapping or warming feeling as each pulse is delivered.

Temporary redness, warmth or mild sensitivity may occur following the procedure.
Downtime is generally minimal. Temporary redness, mild swelling or darkening of pigmented spots may occur following treatment. The darkened areas then gradually fade or flake as the skin renews.

Consistent sun protection is essential following treatment, particularly while the skin is recovering.
Lumecca IPL is often best suited to periods when sun exposure is limited and the skin is not actively tanned. Treatment is generally avoided on recently tanned or sunburned skin because of the increased risk of adverse pigmentary changes.

Pregnancy, photosensitising medications, recent significant sun exposure and relevant skin or medical conditions should be discussed before treatment. Suitability is determined following individual assessment.

Atrophic scars

Atrophic scars are indented scars that most commonly appear following acne or other inflammatory conditions. They are caused by a loss of collagen and uneven skin regeneration.
