Botulinum Toxin for Fine Lines & Wrinkles

Botulinum toxin is one of the most widely used treatments in aesthetic dermatology for temporarily reducing targeted muscle activity and softening dynamic expression lines. At Dermique, every treatment is performed by a dermatologist following a precise assessment of facial expression, anatomy, symmetry and individual muscle activity.

The aim is not to eliminate expression, but to achieve a fresher, more relaxed appearance while preserving natural facial movement.

Choosing the right botulinum toxin

At Dermique, we work with a selection of authorised botulinum toxin products. The choice of product is based on the treatment area, individual muscle activity, desired outcome and other clinical considerations.

This allows each treatment to be tailored not only in terms of dose, but also in product selection, injection technique and placement — creating an individual approach to each patient and treatment area.

Botulinum toxin treatment areas

Lower face and neck

Botulinum toxin can be used in selected areas of the lower face and neck to address concerns such as a gummy smile, perioral lines, chin dimpling and prominent platysmal bands.

Bruxism

Botulinum toxin may be injected into selected muscles involved in jaw clenching and teeth grinding to reduce excessive muscle activity and associated tension.

Suitability is determined following individual assessment, as bruxism may have different underlying causes and may require a multidisciplinary approach.

What to expect during your treatment

Before treatment, the dermatologist assesses facial expression, symmetry, muscle strength and areas of excessive activity. An individual treatment plan is then developed, including product selection, dose and precise injection points.

Botulinum toxin is administered using a very fine needle. The injections are generally well tolerated and the procedure typically takes around 15–20 minutes.

Most patients can return to their usual daily activities shortly afterwards, although temporary redness, tenderness, swelling or bruising may occur at the injection sites.

Frequently asked questions
How does botulinum toxin work?
Botulinum toxin temporarily reduces the activity of selected muscles responsible for dynamic expression lines — such as those that appear when frowning, raising the eyebrows or smiling.

By reducing excessive muscle contraction, the overlying skin appears smoother and expression lines become less pronounced, while carefully planned treatment can preserve natural facial movement.
The effect develops gradually rather than immediately. Initial changes may become noticeable within the first few days, with the result continuing to develop over approximately two weeks.

Individual response and timing can vary depending on the treatment area, dose and product used.
The duration of the effect varies depending on the product used, treatment area, dose, individual muscle activity and metabolism. For many patients, results last approximately 3–6 months, although the duration can vary between individuals and treatment areas.

Your dermatologist will recommend an appropriate treatment interval based on your individual response.
The aim of treatment at Dermique is not to eliminate facial expression. Careful assessment, precise placement and appropriate dosing allow excessive muscle activity to be softened while preserving natural movement and individuality.
Botulinum toxin is a well-established prescription medicine with applications across both aesthetic and medical practice. When used for an appropriate indication by a qualified medical practitioner, following individual assessment and correct dosing, it has a well-characterised safety profile.

As with any medical treatment, side effects and complications are possible and will be discussed with you as part of the consultation and informed consent process.
Most patients can return to their usual daily activities shortly after treatment. Mild redness, swelling, tenderness or bruising may occur around the injection sites and is generally temporary.

Your dermatologist will provide aftercare advice tailored to the areas treated and the procedure performed.
Avoid rubbing, massaging or applying unnecessary pressure to the treated areas immediately after the procedure. Your dermatologist may also recommend temporarily avoiding strenuous exercise, excessive heat, facial treatments or other activities depending on the areas treated.

Follow the individual aftercare instructions provided by your doctor, and contact the clinic if you experience any unexpected or concerning symptoms.

Atrophic scars

Atrophic scars are indented scars that most commonly appear following acne or other inflammatory conditions. They are caused by a loss of collagen and uneven skin regeneration.
